Police in Khulna have detained two brothers after their 65-year-old mother, Mamtaz Begum, died under highly suspicious circumstances at her residence. The arrests were made on Wednesday afternoon following an intervention by local residents who grew concerned over the family’s sudden haste to inter the body.
The incident occurred late on Tuesday night at a house known locally as Doctor Bari, situated on Uttar Kashipur Cemetery Road in the Khalishpur neighbourhood of the city. According to neighbours, family members discovered Mamtaz Begum’s body inside her bedroom. Shocked witnesses reported seeing blood trickling from her eyes and mouth, whilst several distinct marks and bruises were visible across her body.
Suspicion intensified the following afternoon when the victim’s eldest son, Masum, and her youngest son, Mehedi Hasan Sohag—a local homeopath—attempted to arrange an immediate burial without informing their neighbours or local leaders. The unusual urgency, combined with the visible signs of trauma on the body, prompted wary residents to alert the authorities before the funeral could take place.
Officers from the Khalishpur Police Station arrived swiftly at the scene, halted the burial proceedings, and recovered the body. It has since been transferred to the Khulna Medical College Hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination to establish the exact cause of death.
SM Jabid Hasan, the Officer-in-Charge of Khalishpur Police Station, confirmed that the circumstances surrounding the elderly woman’s death remain deeply ambiguous. He stated that the two sons, alongside other family members, are currently being held at the station for formal questioning. Investigators have assured the public that rigorous legal action will be pursued once the forensic report reveals how the injuries were sustained.
