Police in Gazipur have detained two young men following a clandestine torch procession organised by activists affiliated with the Bangladesh Chhatra League.

The incident unfolded on Tuesday afternoon within the jurisdiction of the Bashon Police Station inside the Gazipur Metropolitan area. Law enforcement units intervened after receiving intelligence that party members had gathered to stage a sudden street demonstration. Officers rushed to the scene and apprehended two participants on the spot as the crowd attempted to disperse.

The detainees have been officially identified as 20-year-old Hridoy Ahmed Rishad and 22-year-old Md Sifat Ahmed. Both local residents hail from the Itahata Ranjittek neighbourhood within the Bashon area, with Rishad being the son of Abdus Samad and Sifat the son of Ramzan Ali.

Local security authorities have maintained a strict stance against unsanctioned public assemblies, rallies, or political demonstrations organised by the student faction. Officials reiterated that any attempts to revive unauthorized organizational activities on the streets will be met with immediate legal consequences.

Harunur Rashid, the officer-in-charge (OC) of Bashon Police Station, confirmed the details of the police action and subsequent legal filings.

“A formal criminal case has been registered under existing legal provisions in connection with this incident,” the officer stated. “Our tactical teams are currently reviewing footage and intelligence to identify other individuals who took part in the procession. Operations remain active, and everyone involved will be hunted down and brought before the justice system in due course.”

Investigators are continuing local inquiries to track down fleeing suspects, while legal procedures for the two currently held individuals progress through the local courts.
