Bangladesh has recorded two further deaths linked to suspected measles symptoms over the past 24 hours, taking the nation’s total fatality count from confirmed and suspected cases this year to 880. According to official health data, no deaths from laboratory-confirmed measles were recorded during this period.
The latest bulletin issued on Tuesday by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) covers surveillance data gathered between 8:00 am on Monday and 8:00 am on Tuesday.
Data released by the health authorities indicates that out of the 880 total fatalities logged across the country this year, 98 deaths were attributed to laboratory-confirmed measles cases, whilst 782 individuals succumbed to measles-like symptoms. Regional breakdowns for the latest 24-hour period show that the two recent fatalities occurred in the Dhaka and Sylhet divisions, with each region reporting one death from suspected measles symptoms.
Epidemiological tracking shows a steady rise in overall infections nationwide. Laboratory tests confirmed 107 new measles cases in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of confirmed infections in the country to 17,385.
Physicians and public health teams also identified 872 additional individuals displaying symptoms characteristic of the viral illness over the same timeframe. This brings the cumulative number of suspected cases across Bangladesh to 138,184.
Measles remains a highly contagious airborne virus that primarily affects young children and individuals with compromised immune systems. Health experts continue to emphasize the critical need for timely vaccination, early clinical diagnosis, and immediate isolation of suspected cases to curtail community transmission, particularly in high-density urban areas and vulnerable rural communities where immunization coverage may lag. Regional health offices remain under instruction to strengthen routine vaccination drives and heighten active case monitoring.
