A local leader of the Awami Volunteers League, the affiliate wing of the Awami League, has been arrested by police in the Siddhirganj area of Narayanganj following a confrontation with local residents. The suspect was detained by members of the public late at night after being spotted in his neighbourhood, before being handed over to law enforcement officers who responded to the scene.
The arrested individual has been identified as 38-year-old Md Sojib, who holds the position of president for Ward No. 7 Volunteers League in Siddhirganj. Sojib is the son of Md Yusuf Ali, locally known as Yusuf Patwari, a prominent resident of the Kadamtali Boro Pukur Par locality within Siddhirganj.
According to local sources and police reports, the incident unfolded at approximately 2:45 am on Monday when residents spotted Sojib walking near Kadamtali Boro Pukur Par. Given the recent political developments in Bangladesh and widespread public anger regarding past violence against student protesters, local citizens recognized him and quickly gathered to surround him. Once they ensured he could not leave the area, the group contacted the local police station to report his whereabouts.
Upon receiving the alert, a police patrol team led by Sub-Inspector Md Nazmul Islam of Siddhirganj Police Station was dispatched to the scene. Arriving shortly after the call, officers took custody of Sojib from the assembled crowd and safely transported him to the police station for processing under tight security to prevent any escalation.
Providing details on the operation, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Siddhirganj Police Station, Mohammad Emdadul Haq, confirmed that members of the public had detained Sojib and alerted the authorities. OC Haq stated that police moved swiftly to take the suspect into custody to maintain public order and ensure all proceedings followed due process of law.
Police officials further clarified that Sojib was formally placed under arrest in connection with a case filed under the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement framework. The case involves allegations of violence, attacks on peaceful demonstrators, and involvement in subversive activities during the student-led protests. Following preliminary questioning and the completion of necessary legal formalities at the station, law enforcement officers presented Sojib before a Narayanganj court on Monday afternoon, where the court ordered him to be remanded in custody. Police maintained that targeted operations to locate and apprehend other individuals named in pending cases related to the student movement remain ongoing across the district.
