Two Drug Dealers Arrested with Yaba in Keraniganj Raids

DHAKA — Detectives from the South Division of the Dhaka District Detective Branch (DB) have arrested two suspected narcotics traders during coordinated operations in Keraniganj, seizing 72 Yaba tablets in the process.

The successful drives were detailed in an official press release issued on Sunday, 9 August, by Md Rezaul Karim, Officer-in-Charge of the Dhaka District DB (South).

Acting on precise intelligence gathered on Saturday, investigators learned that active illicit drug transactions were scheduled to take place near the Chunkutia playing field in Shubhadya Union and around the Khalpar Bridge area adjacent to the South Keraniganj railway station. Under the direct instructions of Dhaka District Superintendent of Police Shamima Parveen, and supervised by Additional Superintendent of Police Jahidul Islam Khan, tactical DB teams were dispatched to execute targeted raids across both locations.

Strategic Operations and Arrests

During the initial operation, detective officers intercepted 23-year-old Md Sajid along the road in front of the Chunkutia Army Camp local market. A search of his person yielded 50 pieces of Yaba, a potent synthetic stimulant combining methamphetamine and caffeine. Police records confirm that Sajid resides in the Ghoshkanda area of South Keraniganj.

Later that evening, at approximately 11:45 pm, a second DB unit conducted a swoop on the Khalpar Bridge, situated directly in front of the local railway station. Officers apprehended 32-year-old Md Alauddin Dhali and recovered an additional 22 Yaba tablets from his possession. Alauddin, originally a permanent resident of Atipara in Shariatpur district’s Palang police station area, had been residing in rented accommodation in the Kalibari neighbourhood of South Keraniganj.

Legal Action and Remand Application

Following the seizures, formal charges were registered against both suspects under the relevant sections of the Narcotics Control Act 2018 at the South Keraniganj Police Station.

Officers confirmed that after completing preliminary interrogations and processing paperwork, the police produced both detainees in court, submitting a petition for a five-day remand to facilitate deeper investigations into their distribution networks and suppliers.

The arrests reflect an ongoing police crackdown across Keraniganj, an area on the southwestern periphery of Dhaka that has increasingly emerged as a transit point for narcotics moving into the capital. Yaba remains one of the most widely trafficked illegal substances in Bangladesh, primarily smuggled across southeastern borders before being distributed through urban hotspots. Law enforcement agencies continue to intensify surveillance along key transport corridors surrounding the metropolis to dismantle regional trafficking rings.
