Two JU JCD Leaders Ousted After Social Media Tributes to Sheikh Mujib

Two leaders of the Jahangirnagar University (JU) unit of Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) have been relieved of their primary membership and all organizational posts following allegations of breaching party discipline. The disciplinary action was taken after the leaders reportedly paid tribute to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman by sharing his photograph on their personal Facebook profiles on 15 August.

According to a press release issued on Saturday, signed by the JCD Central Committee’s Office Secretary, Md Jahangir Alam, the decision was taken in accordance with the resolution of the central executive body. The suspended leaders have been identified as Ehte Shimul Haq, a student of the 48th batch in the Department of International Relations, and Foyez Howlader, a student of the 51st batch in the Department of Government and Politics at Jahangirnagar University.

The official notification stated that the duo was ousted based on specific allegations of violating organizational discipline. The decision received formal approval from the central JCD President, Rakibul Islam Rakib, and General Secretary, Nasir Uddin Nasir.

Sources within the JU unit of Chhatra Dal revealed that the catalyst behind the action was the Facebook posts published by the two student leaders on the anniversary of the 15 August 1975 assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The student wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) considers such public homage to the founding president of Bangladesh—and the leader of the rival Awami League—as fundamentally contradictory to the core political ideology and principles of their party.

Although local leaders confirmed the social media posts as the main driver behind the purge, the official press release issued by the central committee refrained from explicitly mentioning the Facebook posts, citing only “specific allegations of breaching party discipline.”

This administrative crackdown on the day of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s death anniversary has sparked widespread discussion across the Jahangirnagar University campus. Political observers note that student political factions in Bangladesh maintain strict ideological control over their cadre, with social media activity increasingly coming under intense scrutiny during sensitive political anniversaries. The incident highlights the zero-tolerance policy enforced by student wings regarding ideological deviations within university campuses.
