Two Men Killed In Chuadanga Level Crossing Collision

A fatal railway accident occurred on the evening of Thursday, 18 June, in the Damurhuda Upazila of Chuadanga district, resulting in the immediate deaths of two young motorcyclists and leaving a third individual catastrophically injured. The incident took place at an unmanned level crossing located in the Chhotodudhpatila area when a motorcycle carrying three individuals was struck by an oncoming passenger train.

Identity of the Victims and Operational Background

Local authorities and emergency services have verified the identities of all three individuals involved in the collision. The two deceased victims have been identified as eighteen-year-old Raj Ahmed, who was the son of Rofiqul Islam, originating from Sorabaria village within Damurhuda Upazila, and twenty-one-year-old Abdullah Al Mamun, the son of Taher Ali, hailing from Mortujapur village in Chuadanga Sadar Upazila.

The third passenger, who survived the initial impact but sustained critical injuries, was identified as twenty-five-year-old Abdul Kader, the son of Rohidul Islam, from Dugdugi village within the same upazila. According to verified records, all three individuals had been undergoing professional vocational training for several months at the Sarojganj Compact Institute of Skill Development. The accident transpired as they were travelling back to their residences together on a single motorcycle at the end of their daily session.

Mechanics of the Accident and Emergency Response

According to accounts provided by local residents and responding emergency personnel, the three men were attempting to traverse the unmanned and unprotected railway crossing in Chhotodudhpatila village on their motorcycle. During this attempt, the Mahananda Express, a scheduled passenger train operating from the southern city of Khulna to the northern divisional city of Rajshahi, approached the crossing and struck the motorcycle.

The violence of the impact completely crushed the motorcycle and caused instantaneous, fatal injuries to Raj Ahmed and Abdullah Al Mamun, both of whom were pronounced dead directly at the scene. The impact severely injured Abdul Kader, causing one of his legs to become completely severed from his body.

Nearby citizens and personnel from the Darsana Fire Service and Civil Defence arrived rapidly at the location to initiate a rescue operation. They extracted Abdul Kader from the tracks and rushed him to the Chuadanga Sadar Hospital for emergency medical intervention. Upon evaluating his critical trauma and noting the progressive deterioration of his physiological condition, the attending hospital physicians officially referred him to the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR), widely known as the Pangu Hospital, located in Dhaka for advanced surgical care.

Official Statements and Legal Processing

Following the accident, units from the local railway law enforcement infrastructure arrived at the scene to secure the area and initiate investigations. Sub-Inspector Jagadish Chandra Basu, representing the Chuadanga Railway Police Outpost, formally confirmed the occurrence of the double fatality and the severe injury. He stated to the press that the mandatory legal procedures, documentation, and formal inquiries regarding the railway accident are actively underway.

Risks Associated with Unprotected Railway Crossings

To provide necessary statutory and physical context, unmanned level crossings present a significant and persistent infrastructure safety challenge across the rail network managed by Bangladesh Railway. These crossings lack automated mechanical barriers, warning signals, or permanently deployed gatekeepers to restrict vehicular and pedestrian movement during the approach of scheduled trains.

Consequently, the responsibility for navigating these intersections relies entirely on the situational awareness of road users, who must look and listen for approaching locomotives before crossing the tracks. This infrastructural deficit frequently intersects with high-density vehicular traffic, poor environmental visibility during evening hours, and a general lack of localised warning signs, contributing directly to recurring vehicular collisions along major national rail corridors. Under standard railway operating laws, trains possess the absolute right of way along all tracks, and accidents occurring at unauthorised or unmanned crossings are processed under specific clauses of the Railways Act, 1890.
