Two young men lost their lives late on Friday night after a fast-moving covered van rammed into their motorcycle at a busy intersection in the Banani area of the capital.

The fatal crash occurred at around 11:15 pm at the Banani Amtoli intersection along the vital Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway, a major arterial route known for heavy commercial traffic during late hours. According to local law enforcement, the two victims were travelling together on a single motorcycle along the thoroughfare. As they attempted to navigate the Amtoli crossing, a speeding covered van struck the vehicle with severe force, casting both riders onto the tarmac.

The impact proved fatal instantly. Onlookers and nearby passers-by rushed to the scene immediately following the crash, but both young men had succumbed to critical injuries before medical assistance could arrive.

Police officers from the Banani Police Station quickly cordoned off the area to manage the resulting traffic congestion and recovered the bodies for official procedures. Authority figures subsequently confirmed the identity of one of the deceased as Khaled Saifullah, son of Mohammad Rafiq Ullah, hailing from the Siraj Mia home in the Sonaimuri sub-district of Noakhali. Efforts to verify the full identity of the second victim are ongoing, with police reviewing personal belongings and reaching out to local databases.

The driver of the covered van fled the scene immediately after the collision, taking advantage of the late-night road conditions to evade arrest. Officers have initiated an active operation to track down the vehicle and detain the runaway driver. Investigators are currently examining CCTV footage from surrounding commercial buildings and traffic control units along the highway to trace the registration details and escape route of the commercial van. Legal proceedings regarding the incident are being formalised, and the bodies have been prepared for post-mortem examinations.
