Two Political Activists Arrested In Chandanish Over Sabotage Plot

Police in Chandanish Upazila of Chattogram have arrested two activists associated with banned political outfits, thwarting an alleged plot to cause disruption around the July Uprising Commemoration Day on 5 August.

The suspects have been identified as 22-year-old Chhatra League activist Jamshed, son of Jahangir Alam, and 23-year-old Jubo League member Mehdi Hasan Shifat, son of Kamal Uddin. Both individuals reside in Ward No. 4 of Barkal Union within Chandanish Upazila.

Officers from Chandanish Police Station executed the arrests late on Sunday night in Barama Union, acting on intelligence that the duo had gathered there to conduct organizational activities and coordinate prospective sabotage plans. Local residents at the scene suggested that both men appeared intoxicated at the time of their apprehension.

Clarifying rumours surrounding the arrest, local Union Parishad member Anisul Islam stated that he was not personally present at the site during the police operation. He noted that while neighbours reported hearing the suspects had consumed yaba tablets, certain quarters distorted his statement to claim the police had recovered narcotics directly from them—an assertion he dismissed as misinformation.

Officer-in-Charge of Chandanish Police Station, S.M. Didarul Islam Sikder, confirmed that law enforcement agencies possess photographic and video evidence placing both suspects at recent flash-processions in Chattogram. According to police, the duo played active roles in demonstrations led by Mizanur Rahman, former senior vice-president of Chattogram South District Chhatra League, who spearheaded several unauthorized rallies across the region.

Officer Sikder emphasized that police maintain a zero-tolerance policy against any attempts to orchestrate violence or sabotage surrounding the 5 August commemorations. Following preliminary processing, both suspects were produced before a local court on Monday and remanded to judicial custody in Chittagong District Jail.
