Two Sentenced to Death for Child Murder

The Dhaka Metropolitan Child Violence Suppression Tribunal has sentenced a man and his wife to death for the rape and murder of an eight-year-old child in the Pallabi area of Dhaka. On Sunday, Judge Masroor Salekin delivered the capital punishment verdict against the primary accused, Sohel Rana, and his wife, Swapna Akter, whilst offering critical observations regarding child protection and judicial efficiency.

Judicial Observations on Child Protection

Before pronouncing the sentences, Judge Masroor Salekin emphasised the profound societal impact of crimes committed against minors. The court observed:

“When a child falls victim to a heinous crime such as sexual assault, violence, or murder, it deeply wounds not only a single family but the entire society, whilst calling into question the effectiveness of the state’s justice system. Ensuring the safety, dignity, and protection of children is one of the most fundamental responsibilities of a civilised and humane state.”

The tribunal highlighted that this specific case carries immense significance due to the swift nature of its investigation, judicial proceedings, and witness depositions. The judge noted that the investigative agency submitted its formal report in an exceptionally short period, and the prosecution promptly presented all vital witnesses to ensure an efficient trial.

The court further revealed that this specialized tribunal, constituted under the Prevention of Women and Children Repression Act, is currently managing over 1,800 pending cases. Every single one of these cases involves sexual assault, physical abuse, or other severe violence against children. The judge expressed hope that the rapid and impartial handling of the Pallabi case would serve as a benchmark for the remaining backlog.

Verity of Evidence and Financial Penalties

The tribunal clarified that its rulings are guided strictly by the law, empirical evidence, and timeless principles of justice rather than emotion. Based on the defendants’ confessional statements, the testimony of the investigating officer, and the medical inquest reports, the prosecution established the absolute guilt of the accused.

The evidence proved that Sohel Rana raped and murdered the child before cutting open a bathroom window grill to flee the flat. His wife, Swapna Akter, remained inside the premises and actively assisted her husband by failing to intervene during the assault, murder, and subsequent attempts to conceal the body. Consequently, the court ruled that Swapna Akter was equally culpable.

In addition to the death sentences, the tribunal imposed heavy financial penalties. Sohel Rana has been fined 500,000 Taka, whilst Swapna Akter has been fined 200,000 Taka. The court explicitly ordered that the entirety of these financial penalties must be paid directly to the victim’s family. If the convicts fail to provide the funds, the authorities are instructed to liquidate their movable and immovable assets to recover the designated amounts.

Timeline and Case Background

The case originated on 19 May, when law enforcement agencies recovered the dismembered body of the eight-year-old child from a flat in a residential building in Pallabi. Following the discovery, the police immediately detained Swapna Akter inside the flat, whilst her husband, Sohel Rana, was apprehended later that evening in the Fatullah area of Narayanganj.

The legal process proceeded through the following established timeline:

Date Procedural Milestone and Event Details
19 May Recovery of the child’s body in Pallabi; detention of Swapna Akter and arrest of Sohel Rana in Fatullah.
20 May Both defendants provide voluntary confessional statements before Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Aminul Islam Junaid.
1 June The tribunal formally frames criminal charges against both defendants, ordering the official start of the trial.
7 June (Sunday) Following evidence evaluation and closing arguments, the tribunal issues the final death penalty verdict.

The victim’s father initiated the formal prosecution by filing a criminal case at the Pallabi Police Station immediately after the incident occurred, culminating in Sunday’s final judgment.
