Two Women’s Claims Disrupt Wedding as Groom’s Father Dies

A wedding ceremony in Netrokona’s Purbadhala has been called off after two women reportedly arrived at the groom’s family home claiming to have romantic relationships with him, leaving his father so distressed that he allegedly took his own life.

The incident took place on Wednesday night, 29 July, in Panishana Purba Para village of Ghagra Union in Purbadhala upazila. The deceased was identified as Mohammad Suruj Mia, 45, son of the late Abdul Majid and a resident of the same village.

According to local residents and police, preparations were under way for the wedding of Suruj Mia’s elder son, Helal Mia. The groom’s family was preparing to travel with the wedding procession to the bride’s home in neighbouring Hiranyapatti village when two women reportedly arrived at the groom’s residence.

Both women allegedly claimed that they had been romantically involved with Helal. The unexpected claims prompted discussions between the families and others present. Following those discussions, a decision was reportedly reached to arrange Helal’s marriage with one of the women who had made the claim. As a result, the previously scheduled wedding with the bride in Hiranyapatti was cancelled.

As part of an attempt to settle the matter, the groom’s family reportedly agreed to pay Tk 50,000 in compensation to the family of the bride whose wedding was called off. The sudden turn of events, however, is said to have left Suruj Mia deeply distressed and emotionally overwhelmed.

Later that night, while arrangements were reportedly being made for Helal to marry the woman who had claimed to be his lover, relatives found Suruj Mia hanging from a mango tree near his home at around 11pm. He was subsequently recovered from the scene after police were informed.

Police said they are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death. The body was recovered and arrangements were being made to send it to Netrokona Modern Sadar Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

Purbadhala Police Station officer-in-charge Abdullah Al Mamun said the incident was under investigation. He added that the two women, including the one who had claimed a romantic relationship with the groom, had been taken to the police station for questioning.

The officer said legal proceedings were under way in connection with the incident. He also stated that the groom had reportedly remained missing since the incident.

The case has drawn attention to the emotional and social pressures that can emerge when disputes involving relationships and marriage suddenly escalate. Police are expected to establish the sequence of events through questioning and other investigative procedures. The exact circumstances surrounding Suruj Mia’s death, including the factors that may have contributed to his alleged suicide, will be clarified once the investigation and post-mortem process are completed.
