Driven by a resolute winning mindset and a structured long-term vision, the Bangladesh Under-20 national football team is aiming to make significant strides on the international stage. Head coach Gerard Emlyn Jones and newly recruited forward Adam Abbas outlined the team’s ambitions during a press briefing held at midday on Sunday, following an intensive residential training session at the Shamsul Huda Football Academy in Jhenaidah.
Coach Jones explained that the extended residential camp provided an ideal environment to thoroughly evaluate player capabilities. The technical staff is designing a comprehensive roadmap targeting upcoming international fixtures for both the Under-17 and Under-20 squads, alongside immediate competitive commitments.
As part of their rigorous preparations, the team has already competed in more than four friendly matches. These fixtures have allowed the coaching staff to test various tactical formations while exposing players to high-pressure match situations and enhancing their physical conditioning. Jones emphasized that pitch conditions should never serve as an excuse; rather, the focus remains firmly on building player stamina, core balance, and tactical versatility. His primary philosophy centers on instilling an unwavering winning mentality, ensuring that players deliver their absolute best whenever they represent the nation.
The squad has been significantly strengthened by the arrival of 19-year-old Adam Abbas, a British-Bangladeshi footballer who travelled from England to join the national setup. Primarily operating as a right winger, Abbas is equally adept at playing as a central striker or traditional number nine. His footballing background includes valuable experience within the youth academies of prominent English clubs Manchester United and Burnley.
Speaking about the new recruit, Jones described Abbas as a highly professional, humble, and eager learner. The coaching setup has devised specific development plans to mold him into a prolific goalscorer and key tactical asset for Bangladesh.
Expressing his delight at joining the setup, Abbas shared his immense pride in representing Bangladesh. He praised the dedication of the coaching staff, technical team, and his fellow squad members, noting that the international journeys of high-profile players like Hamza Choudhury and Yasin Alfi Reza served as strong inspiration for his own decision to play for the country.
Abbas identified strong performances in major continental competitions, including the upcoming AFC Asian Cup qualifiers, as the primary objective for the squad. With a strong mutual understanding between the players and technical staff, he expressed confidence that collective hard work will yield historic achievements for Bangladeshi football.
