An unidentified woman, believed to be around 40 years of age, lost her life in the early hours of Wednesday following a road traffic collision on the Mayor Hanif Flyover in Dhaka’s Jatrabari area.
The fatal hit-and-run occurred at approximately 5:30 am along the inbound lane leading from Dholairpar towards Jatrabari. Police officers arrived at the scene roughly two and a half hours later, retrieving the body around 8:00 am.
Sub-Inspector Md Saiduzzaman of Jatrabari Police Station confirmed that the woman died instantly upon impact from an unknown vehicle. Attire recovered at the scene was noted as a white patterned long-sleeved shirt and grey trousers. Following the completion of preliminary legal formalities on site, the remains were dispatched to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue at noon for a post-mortem examination.
Law enforcement officers are reviewing surrounding surveillance feeds and working alongside forensics teams to ascertain both the victim’s identity and the details of the fleeing vehicle.
This tragic event underscores persistent safety challenges across Dhaka’s elevated arterial networks. The Mayor Hanif Flyover—stretching over 11 kilometres as the capital’s longest elevated expressway—serves as a critical gateway connecting southern districts to the urban core. Despite heavy traffic volumes, the lack of pedestrian barriers and limited foot overbridges on access ramps frequently lead to high-speed collisions, particularly during the low-visibility hours of dawn and dusk. Transport experts have repeatedly voiced concerns regarding reckless driving and inadequate enforcement on the stretch, where high vehicles routinely navigate alongside vulnerable road users.
Local authorities confirmed that an investigation into the collision remains ongoing. Law enforcement continues to appeal to the public for any information that might assist in identifying the deceased or locating the driver involved.
