Tensions along the India-Bangladesh border escalated briefly in Meherpur Sadar sub-district after the Border Security Force (BSF) of India detained a 70-year-old Bangladeshi farmer. In swift retaliation, angry local villagers detained two Indian nationals positioned near the border line, prompting an emergency flag meeting between border guards to defuse the standoff.
The incident unfolded at around 8:00 am on Tuesday near the Ichakhali border point. Abdul Mannan, a resident of Ichakhali Masjid Para and son of the late Nur Bux, was spraying pesticides on his agricultural field when BSF personnel seized him. According to family members, Mannan has cultivated green chillies and other crops on his 1.5-bigha plot along the border for years.
News of Mannan’s detention spread rapidly through Ichakhali village. His grandson, Ibrahim Khalilullah, revealed that residents initially appealed to the BSF to release the elderly farmer. When border guards refused, outraged villagers crossed onto adjacent border land and detained two Indian farmers, identified as Sachin Karmakar and Narayan Deb, bringing them back into Bangladeshi territory.
Recognising the volatile nature of the situation, officers from Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and the BSF convened a flag meeting at 2:00 pm. Following negotiations, all three individuals were safely returned to their respective border authorities. Lieutenant Colonel Najmul Hasan, Commanding Officer of Chuadanga Battalion (6 BGB), confirmed that Mannan was handed back to Bangladesh while the two Indian nationals were returned to BSF custody.
In a separate development along the northern frontier, BSF personnel detained a 23-year-old Bangladeshi youth in Kurigram district late on Monday night. The individual, identified as Azibor Rahman from Kajiar Char, was apprehended in the Donalar Matha area of Shilkhuri Union under Bhurungamari sub-district.
Local sources reported that a small group attempted to cross into Indian territory near the international border pillars at midnight. While others managed to flee back into Bangladesh upon encountering a BSF patrol, Rahman was taken into custody. Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Mahbub-ul-Haq, Commanding Officer of Kurigram Battalion (22 BGB), stated that legal and diplomatic channels have been activated to secure the young man’s repatriation.
