Viral Video Allegedly Shows BNP Leader Using Cannabis, Yaba

A video allegedly showing a local Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader consuming cannabis and yaba has gone viral on social media, triggering discussion in Lakshmipur’s Ramganj.

The 35-second video reportedly began circulating widely on Facebook on Sunday evening (2 August). Following the video’s spread, the alleged BNP leader, identified as Miron Jamaddar, has reportedly switched off his mobile phone and remained out of contact.

Miron is the general secretary of Ward No. 2 of the Noagaon Union BNP in Ramganj Upazila. He also works as a tea-stall owner.

The footage appears to show Miron putting cannabis into a cigarette before allegedly consuming yaba. The authenticity of the video, including when and where it was recorded, has not been independently verified. Attempts to contact Miron by telephone were unsuccessful, as his mobile phone was reportedly switched off.

Maruf Bhuiyan, president of the Noagaon Union BNP, said Miron had told him that the incident took place during the tenure of the previous Awami League government. According to Maruf, Miron claimed that he had been influenced or pressured by people associated with the Awami League at the time and had used drugs in those circumstances.

Maruf also alleged that the video had recently been circulated as part of an internal political dispute. He defended Miron’s current activities, saying the BNP leader had since changed his position and was now involved in efforts against drug abuse.

According to the union BNP president, Miron has worked with party activists in opposing drug use in the area and had recently helped authorities apprehend several alleged drug users. He also described Miron as an elected general secretary of the ward-level BNP unit.

The allegations have not, however, been independently established, and there has been no immediate public statement from Miron himself to confirm or deny the claims made about the video.

The incident has drawn renewed attention to the broader problem of drug abuse in local communities. Cannabis and yaba remain among the substances targeted by law enforcement agencies in Bangladesh, with police regularly conducting raids and arrests against alleged drug dealers and users.

Firoz Uddin Chowdhury, officer-in-charge of Ramganj Police Station, said he was currently on leave but had seen the video. He said police operations against drug dealers and users were continuing and that an anti-drug drive had also been conducted on the day.

As the video continues to circulate online, questions remain over its origin, the circumstances in which it was recorded and whether any formal investigation will be launched. Authorities have yet to announce any legal action against Miron in connection with the footage.
