The BPL’s 12th players’ auction delivered a mix of pragmatism, hesitation, and one bold stroke that dominated the day’s narrative. Mohammad Naim’s acquisition by Chattogram Royals for Tk 11 million did not merely headline the auction; it signalled a shift in how franchises are valuing young domestic batting talent.
Yet the broader spending trends tell a very different story—one of restraint. Not a single franchise utilised the maximum Tk 45 million allowed for local players. Rangpur Riders came closest, spending Tk 41.6 million, while focusing on proven performers such as Towhid Hridoy and Liton Das. Their calculated investment suggests a deliberate attempt to build a stable core.
Chattogram’s strategy, by contrast, revolved around marquee names. Their total outlay of Tk 38.7 million heavily revolved around Naim. Rajshahi Warriors, meanwhile, opted for squad depth, purchasing 13 players for Tk 38.1 million.
Noakhali Express, with the lowest expenditure of Tk 26.3 million, appeared focused on youth development rather than star power. Dhaka Capitals and Sylhet Titans adopted more moderate approaches.
Most surprising, however, was the minimal enthusiasm for overseas players. Despite a cap of USD 350,000, teams largely ignored foreign options, with Dhaka Capitals being the lone exception. Even an experienced spinner like India’s Piyush Chawla failed to attract interest.
Only three Sri Lankans were picked up—Dickwella, Mathews, and Shanaka—highlighting the narrow demand for foreign talent this season.
Attention now shifts to the forthcoming overseas auction, where more than 250 international cricketers are listed. With each team required to sign at least two foreign players, the cautious approach seen earlier may give way to competitive bidding.
