Why does GTA 6 keep getting delayed?

Published: 08 Nov 2025, 07:30 pm

"Here we go again."

When Grand Theft Auto 6 was delayed on Thursday, the famous line from the series perfectly summed up how many gamers were feeling.

Resignation. Frustration. Déjà vu.

It marks the second time that developer Rockstar Games has informed players they will have to wait even longer for what is expected to be one of the biggest entertainment releases in history.

The studio, renowned for its perfectionism, has a reputation for withholding its blockbuster titles until they meet its exacting standards, so the news did not come as a complete shock.

Still, it has left millions asking the same question: what is taking so long?

A timeline

Rockstar Games officially confirmed development on GTA 6 in February 2022. An initial trailer, released nearly 18 months later, announced that the game would launch in 2025.

The trailer revealed that the game would feature two protagonists — a couple named Jason and Lucia — and would be set in Leonida, a fictional US state inspired by Florida.

Later, Rockstar announced a delay, setting a new release date of 26 May 2026.

Fans were thrilled, particularly when some noticed the date coincided with the funeral of real-life outlaws Bonnie and Clyde — figures widely believed to have inspired GTA 6’s lead characters. The timing seemed too deliberate to be a coincidence.

But that, too, proved temporary. The game has now been delayed again, with a new release date of 19 November 2026.

What’s taking so long?

One major reason is Rockstar’s unique position in the gaming industry — it continues to profit enormously from its existing library.

GTA 5 remains the second best-selling video game of all time and continues to generate strong sales 13 years after its original release.

In the UK alone, it sold 730,000 copies last year, according to the Entertainment Retail Association, while Red Dead Redemption 2 sold 350,000 copies in the same period. Both titles ranked among 2024’s top ten best-sellers.

Then there’s GTA Online — the hugely popular multiplayer mode that continues to dominate global gaming charts month after month.

It has been credited with generating a substantial share of the $8.9 billion (£6.7 billion) the GTA series has reportedly earned since GTA 5 launched.

While GTA 6 is expected to be one of the most expensive games ever developed, Rockstar is still reaping profits from its earlier titles.

However, publisher Take-Two Interactive revealed this week that GTA Online’s player numbers have declined, as anticipated.

Experts have previously told BBC Newsbeat that GTA 6’s true success will depend on how effectively it can attract existing GTA Online players to its new online platform.

Will GTA 6 get delayed again?

When it comes to Grand Theft Auto, nothing is guaranteed.

Rockstar has faced criticism in the past for alleged “crunch” culture — a practice of mandatory overtime aimed at meeting deadlines and release targets.

The controversial practice, used across the wider games industry, has been condemned for separating workers from their families and causing burnout.

At the time, Rockstar stated that no employee was ever forced to work additional hours, and that it was continually seeking to improve its working conditions.

Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier, who previously reported extensively on Red Dead Redemption 2’s development, has said there now appears to be a “real desire” within Rockstar’s management to avoid crunch during GTA 6’s production.

Earlier this week, 30 former Rockstar employees who had been dismissed accused the company of attempting to block unionisation efforts.

The studio denied the allegation, claiming the individuals were terminated for gross misconduct related to sharing confidential information — an accusation rejected by the IWGB Game Workers’ Union.

Although the dismissals are unlikely to be directly tied to the latest delay, the loss of experienced developers could nonetheless affect the project’s timeline.

For now, most fans seem content to wait a bit longer for what many believe will be the “game of the century.”

Whether that patience will ultimately be rewarded — or squandered — remains firmly in Rockstar’s hands.
