Specialist transit police deployed on Dhaka’s Mass Rapid Transit system have intercepted a woman attempting to transport a substantial quantity of cannabis through the capital’s elevated rail network. Officers apprehended 45-year-old Shiuli at the Secretariat Metro Station on Sunday afternoon, 6 September, after discovering four kilogrammes of the illicit drug concealed inside her personal belongings.
The suspect, identified as the wife of Jahangir from the Kanchpur area under Sonargaon Police Station in Narayanganj district, was intercepted at around 5:50 pm.
According to sources within the MRT Police, officers stationed at the concourse level were conducting routine passenger screenings and security checks in front of Gate ‘C’ at Concourse-1. Security personnel grew suspicious upon noticing Shiuli’s nervous demeanor and erratic movements as she approached the entry barriers. Acting on their observations, officers requested to inspect her luggage.
A search of her shoulder bag and an accompanying shopping bag uncovered four neatly wrapped parcels covered in black paper. Upon closer examination, each bundle was found to contain processed cannabis, bringing the total seizure to four kilogrammes.
Inspector (Operations) Md Mohsin Sheikh of the MRT Police confirmed the arrest and seizure. He explained that following her detention, officers conducted a preliminary interrogation on-site and prepared a formal seizure list detailing the recovered narcotics in accordance with legal procedures.
Police are completing the necessary documentation to transfer both the suspect and the seized contraband to the local police station with jurisdiction over the area. Authorities confirmed that a formal case under the Narcotics Control Act is being lodged against the suspect, with investigators looking into the intended destination and origins of the illicit consignment.
