A distressing scene unfolded in Jamalpur town on Sunday morning when police recovered the body of a 30-year-old homemaker from a locked flat, shortly after local residents rescued her two young children who were trapped inside another room begging for water through a window.
The deceased has been identified as Israt Jahan. The harrowing incident took place in a residential building located near the Shekher Bhita railway crossing within the town. Following the discovery, the victim’s husband, 35-year-old Kawsar Ahmed Shawon, absconded and remains missing as authorities launch a search to trace his whereabouts. The couple shared two children: a ten-year-old daughter and a five-year-old son.
According to local residents and eyewitnesses, the tragedy came to light when neighbours noticed the two young children crying inconsolably near a window, repeatedly pleading for water from passers-by. Disturbed by their desperate cries, neighbours immediately alerted the building’s landlord. Upon reaching the apartment on the upper floors, they discovered the front door securely padlocked from the outside.
Realising something was amiss, local residents broke the lock to gain access to the residence. They quickly rescued the two terrified, dehydrated children from one of the bedrooms. However, upon checking the adjacent room, they discovered Israt Jahan lying motionless. The witnesses promptly contacted the national emergency service by dialing 999 to report the incident to local law enforcement.
Mousumi Akter, a local resident who assisted during the rescue, recounted that the sight of the helpless children begging for water through the window raised immediate suspicion. She noted that after breaking open the front door, residents were shocked to find the young mother unresponsive inside.
Officers from Jamalpur Police Station arrived swiftly at the scene, secured the area, and conducted an initial inquest. The body was subsequently dispatched to the morgue at Jamalpur General Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
Confirming the details, the Officer-in-Charge of Jamalpur Police Station, Najmus Sakib, stated that law enforcement moved quickly upon receiving the emergency call to retrieve the body and rescue the children. He added that the exact cause of death remains unconfirmed pending the autopsy report. Police have launched a formal investigation into the suspicious circumstances surrounding the death and are actively searching for the victim’s missing husband.
