Woman Suffers Acid Burns in Attack Allegedly by Ex-Husband

A young woman has suffered acid burns after her former husband allegedly attacked her while she was returning home from work in the New Bazar area of Bhatara, in the Bangladeshi capital, Dhaka.

The victim, identified as Rozina Akter, sustained burns to around 20 per cent of her body in the incident, which took place at about 8pm on Monday. She was subsequently taken to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery for treatment.

Sultan Mahmud Sikder, a resident physician at the institute, confirmed that Rozina had suffered burns affecting 20 per cent of her body. He said she was receiving the necessary medical care. No further details about her condition were immediately available.

According to her brother, Md Jamal, Rozina lives in a rented house in the New Bazar area of Bhatara and works at an establishment inside Bashundhara City Shopping Complex.

Jamal alleged that his sister was returning home after finishing work at around 8pm on Monday when her former husband, identified as Md Sharif, threw acid at her. The attack left parts of her body severely burned.

Her family subsequently arranged for her to be taken to hospital. Jamal said Rozina arrived at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery at around 10pm, where doctors began providing treatment for her injuries.

Acid attacks can cause severe physical injuries, including burns, permanent scarring and, in serious cases, damage to the eyes and other vital areas. Survivors may also require prolonged medical treatment, reconstructive surgery and psychological support. Prompt medical attention is essential to assess the extent of the injuries and manage potential complications.

The circumstances surrounding the alleged attack, including the motive, have not been established in the information available. No official statement from the police regarding the incident, the filing of a case or the arrest of the accused was available at the time of reporting.

The allegation against Sharif has yet to be independently verified. Further investigation would be necessary to establish the full circumstances of the incident and determine responsibility.

The case has once again drawn attention to the serious consequences of acid violence and the importance of ensuring the safety of survivors, providing timely medical assistance and pursuing allegations through a proper legal process.
