A tragic accident during the construction of the stage for an upcoming concert by global pop star Shakira in Rio de Janeiro has resulted in the death of a construction worker. The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon at Copacabana Beach, where large-scale preparations were underway for the event titled “Todo Mundo no Rio”.
According to organisers and the local fire department, the worker sustained critical injuries when a mechanical failure occurred during the installation of stage structures. Emergency medical teams on site immediately provided first aid before he was rushed by fire brigade ambulance to hospital. Despite rapid medical intervention, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after admission.
The event organiser issued a statement via social media confirming the fatality and describing the incident as a “deeply distressing accident”. They added that they were cooperating fully with authorities and extending support to the victim’s family.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of confusion and alarm as parts of the stage structure suddenly collapsed. A 51-year-old witness, António Marcos Ferreira dos Santos, reported that panic spread quickly across the beachfront as workers and bystanders rushed towards the site after hearing a loud mechanical crash.
Rescue operations were initially carried out by colleagues at the site before the fire service arrived. Authorities later confirmed that the victim had been trapped beneath a heavy lifting system used to position stage equipment, sustaining severe trauma to his lower body.
He was taken to Miguel Couto Municipal Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
