Young Man Murdered in Dhaka and Buried in Cardboard Box

A horrific crime has unravelled in the capital after police recovered the decomposing body of a 17-year-old youth from a remote village in Nilphamari. The victim, identified as Rakib, son of Khademul Islam from Uddampur Dakshinpara in Tangail’s Gopalpur upazila, was murdered in Dhaka before his body was wrapped in a cardboard box, transported across districts, and buried. The suspect, a youth named Mamun, allegedly committed the murder, buried the remains in his native village, and then used artificial intelligence technology to extort ransom from the victim’s family.
Investigators revealed that Rakib and Mamun had met roughly a month ago. A dispute subsequently arose between the two, which officers believe served as the primary motive for the killing. Following the murder, Mamun devised an elaborate scheme to conceal the crime. He packaged Rakib’s body in a cardboard box, carried it to his home village of Balapara in Chhatnai Union under Dimla Upazila, and buried it in a secluded spot before returning to Dhaka.
Upon returning to the capital, Mamun staged a kidnapping scenario, informing Rakib’s family that the teenager was being held captive and demanding a substantial ransom. To convince the distraught family that Rakib was still alive, Mamun reportedly generated synthetic video footage using AI tools. Misled by the manipulated media, the victim’s family transferred a portion of the demanded money before growing suspicious and alerting law enforcement authorities.
Acting on the family’s formal complaint, a special investigative team from Dhaka tracked down and arrested Mamun in the Shukrabad area of the capital. During interrogation, he confessed to the murder and disclosed the precise location where he had buried the body.
On Monday, 6 October 2026, the Dhaka investigative team conducted a joint raid in Balapara village alongside local officers. Guided by Mamun’s confession, police excavated the site and recovered the cardboard-wrapped, partially decomposed remains of the teenager.
Confirming the exhumation, Officer-in-Charge of Dimla Police Station Ashraful Alam stated that the body was dispatched to a hospital morgue for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. He added that following the completion of local legal formalities, the arrested suspect would be formally handed over to the Dhaka investigative team to face charges of murder, concealment of evidence, and extortion.
