A senior opposition youth leader has been detained in Sitakunda, Chattogram, after allegedly assaulting a police constable inside the premises of the local police station during a dispute over motorcycle parking.
The incident occurred at approximately 9:00 pm on Thursday, 1 October, within the complex of Sitakunda Model Police Station. The accused, Md Ismail Hossain, serves as the vice-president of the Chattogram North District Jubo Dal, the youth wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
According to police accounts, the altercation began at the main entrance of the police station when Constable Md Shafique, who was on duty at the gate, instructed Ismail Hossain regarding the placement of his motorcycle. A heated argument ensued over parking the vehicle, which rapidly escalated into physical violence. Ismail allegedly attacked Constable Shafique, inflicting injuries that required immediate medical attention. Fellow officers stationed nearby intervened, apprehending the suspect on the spot and transporting the injured constable to the Sitakunda Upazila Health Complex for treatment.
Local activists from the BNP and Jubo Dal downplayed the severity of the incident, claiming that the confrontation was merely a minor verbal exchange that had been blown out of proportion. Attempts to reach senior local party officials for an official statement, including the member secretary of the Sitakunda Upazila BNP, proved unsuccessful as repeated phone calls went unanswered.
Security inside law enforcement facilities remains a sensitive priority across Bangladesh, with police stations maintained as restricted zones where assault on uniformed personnel carries severe legal ramifications under public order legislation.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sitakunda Model Police Station, Mohinul Islam, confirmed the detention and stated that physical aggression against a police officer on duty inside a police facility cannot be tolerated. He added that statutory legal proceedings have been initiated against the detained Jubo Dal leader, and formal charges related to assaulting a police officer and obstructing official duties are being prepared prior to his presentation in court.
