The funeral of 12-year-old Huzaifa Afnan, who succumbed to injuries sustained from a stray bullet fired from across the Myanmar border, was held on Sunday, 8 February, in Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar.
The burial took place at the family graveyard in the Lamba Bil Techchibridge area of Hoiakya Union at 11:00 am, following a solemn janaza prayer attended by local residents and representatives of various political and social organisations. Among those present were Shahjahan Chowdhury, the BNP candidate for Ukhiya-Teknaf constituency, Nur Mohammad Anwari, candidate of the Daripalla party, and district leaders of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami.
Local attendees expressed deep concern over repeated incidents along the border, urging authorities to strengthen surveillance to prevent further loss of innocent lives. They also called for decisive government action to halt the presence and activities of armed Rohingya elements in the border areas.
Huzaifa was a third-grade student at a local school and the eldest child of her family. Her body arrived at her ancestral home from Dhaka at 3:00 am on Saturday, 7 February, following her death at the National Institute of Neurosciences Hospital in Dhaka the previous morning at 9:30 am.
The tragic chain of events began on 11 January, when Huzaifa was seriously injured by a stray bullet amid ongoing armed clashes in the Lamba Bil border area of Hoiakya Union, Myanmar. She was initially treated at a local hospital before being transferred to Chittagong Medical College Hospital and later to Dhaka for advanced treatment. Despite 27 days of intensive medical care, her injuries proved fatal.
The community has called for enhanced border security measures and swift governmental intervention to ensure that no other innocent lives are lost in these recurring cross-border incidents.
