In a distressing revelation, Sonia Akter, a resident of Dhaka, has come forward alleging prolonged harassment, betrayal, and threats from her husband, Mohammad Roki Hossain. She claims she has been forced to flee her home in fear of her safety.
Sonia made the allegations during a press conference on Saturday at the Bangladesh Crime Reporters’ Association in Segunbagicha, Dhaka. She accused her husband of deceit, neglecting his marital responsibilities, and coercing her with threats to share private and intimate images on social media. According to Sonia, some images have already been published online without her consent, and her husband has threatened to release further material unless she pays him five lakh taka.
Sonia stated that she married Roki Hossain, a resident of Keraniganj, in 2022. “From very early in our marriage, his behaviour became erratic and unpredictable,” she said. She added that Roki would alternately acknowledge and deny her as his wife, creating a climate of emotional instability.
The most alarming aspect, Sonia said, is that her husband secretly took private photos of their marital life and threatened to circulate them publicly. “He has already posted some of these images on Facebook, and he continues to threaten me with further exposure if I do not comply with his demands,” she explained.
Seeking justice and protection, Sonia appealed to the Inspector General of Police and the Dhaka District Police Superintendent to intervene and ensure her safety. She expressed deep concern over the psychological and social harm caused by the threats, noting that she has been living in hiding to avoid her husband’s harassment.
The case highlights growing concerns about digital harassment, coercion, and the misuse of personal content in domestic disputes. Women’s rights advocates emphasise that the legal system must respond swiftly to prevent further abuse and protect victims.
