Astronomers have provided preliminary guidance on the duration of Ramadan in 2026 and the anticipated date of Eid al-Fitr, offering clarity for Muslims preparing for the holy month. According to Ibrahim Al Jarwan, Chairman of the Astronomical Society of the United Arab Emirates, scientific calculations suggest that Ramadan this year is more likely to last 29 days rather than 30.
Commencement of Ramadan:
The new moon marking the start of Ramadan is expected to be born on the evening of 17 February 2026. However, Al Jarwan notes that the moon will set just one minute after sunset, making it impossible to sight with the naked eye. Consequently, if the crescent is observed on the evening of 18 February, the first day of Ramadan will fall on 19 February 2026.
Conclusion of Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr:
Based on astronomical calculations, the last day of Ramadan could be 19 March 2026, which would mean that Eid al-Fitr is likely to be celebrated globally on 20 March 2026. While there may be minor differences in the start of Ramadan due to geographical variations and local moon sightings, Al Jarwan emphasises that the celebration of Eid is expected to coincide across nearly all countries.
The following table summarises the key dates based on current astronomical predictions:
| Event | Date (2026) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| New Moon | 17 February (evening) | Moon sets one minute after sunset; not visible to the naked eye |
| Start of Ramadan (1st day) | 19 February (tentative) | Dependent on crescent sighting on 18 February |
| Last Day of Ramadan | 19 March (tentative) | Based on 29-day lunar month calculation |
| Eid al-Fitr | 20 March (expected) | Celebrated globally if moon sighted as predicted |
Al Jarwan also reminded the public that, according to Islamic tradition, the final dates of Ramadan and Eid are determined by the actual sighting of the moon, rather than astronomical calculations alone. Therefore, local religious authorities will confirm the dates in each country before official announcements.
As Muslims around the world prepare for fasting, this early guidance allows families, communities, and organisations to plan ahead, balancing religious observance with daily life commitments. The alignment of Eid celebrations across countries is expected to enhance the sense of global unity during this sacred festival.
