Police have arrested 11 people, including an alleged drug dealer wanted in four cases, during a special operation in Tongi West area of Gazipur metropolitan city.
The arrested man has been identified as Mizan, 34, also known as ‘Kutta Mizan’. Police said he was wanted under an arrest warrant and had previously been named in four separate cases. He is the son of Ata Uddin, also known as Janu Mia, of the Haji Mazar area.
Tongi West Police confirmed the arrests at a press briefing on Friday (28 August). Officer-in-Charge Md Arifur Rahman said a substantial quantity of narcotics was recovered during the operation.
According to police, the raid was conducted late on Thursday night as part of a special operation in the Tongi West police station area. A team led by Sub-Inspector Shahidul Islam was carrying out ‘Special Operation-81’ when officers conducted a search at around 3.15am near the gate of Shaheed Ahsan Ullah Master Stadium, close to the Tongi Bata Gate.
Mizan was arrested at the scene, police said.
During the operation, officers allegedly recovered one kilogramme of heroin, 2,500 yaba tablets and a motorcycle believed to have been used to transport the drugs. Police estimated the value of the recovered heroin at around Tk 10 million.
Police records cited during the briefing show that Mizan had previously faced two drug-related cases, one case under the Speedy Trial Act and another case under a different charge, bringing the total number of cases against him to four.
The operation also resulted in the arrest of 10 other people over alleged involvement in drug-related activities. Police did not provide detailed information about the individual allegations against those 10 people or specify whether additional narcotics were recovered from them.
Officer-in-Charge Arifur Rahman said legal action had been taken against all 11 arrested individuals. Cases were filed and the suspects were subsequently sent to court, according to the police.
The arrests came as part of police efforts to tackle the distribution and transportation of illegal drugs in the Tongi area. The recovery of heroin and yaba, along with the seizure of a vehicle allegedly used for transporting narcotics, formed a key part of the investigation.
Police said the case process would now proceed through the relevant legal channels. Further details concerning the alleged involvement of the arrested individuals are expected to emerge as the investigation progresses.
