25 Platoons of BGB, SRB and Ansar Deployed to Prevent Labour Protests in Gazipur

Authorities have stepped up security across the industrial areas of Gazipur, deploying 25 platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), the Special Reserve Battalion (SRB) and Ansar personnel alongside police to maintain law and order amid continuing labour unrest.

The deployment was confirmed on Wednesday morning by Md Arif Hossain, Assistant Commissioner of the Media and Research Cell at the Gazipur Deputy Commissioner’s Office.

According to the official, security arrangements have been strengthened in stages over the past three days in response to concerns about possible unrest in the industrial belt.

On Monday, 10 platoons of BGB personnel were deployed under the supervision of 21 executive magistrates. The following day, the number of executive magistrates was increased to 25, while 11 BGB platoons were assigned to maintain security.

On Wednesday, the BGB deployment was increased by a further platoon, bringing its total strength to 12 platoons. An additional eight platoons of SRB personnel and five platoons of Ansar members were also deployed.

The combined deployment now stands at 25 platoons, comprising 12 platoons of BGB, eight of SRB and five of Ansar. A total of 25 executive magistrates have been assigned to oversee operations and coordinate the enforcement of law and order across the industrial areas.

The increased security presence is intended to prevent further escalation of labour-related tensions and ensure that any potential disruption can be addressed promptly. The authorities are maintaining a visible presence in the industrial belt, where labour disputes and demonstrations can affect factory operations as well as transport networks.

Gazipur is one of Bangladesh’s major industrial hubs, hosting a large concentration of garment factories and other manufacturing establishments. Its industrial activities play an important role in the country’s export economy and provide employment to a substantial workforce.

Labour unrest in the area can have consequences beyond individual factories. Demonstrations and road blockades may disrupt workers’ daily movements, delay the transportation of goods and raw materials, and cause difficulties for commuters travelling between Dhaka and neighbouring districts.

The two major highways passing through the region — the Dhaka-Tangail and Dhaka-Mymensingh routes — are particularly important for industrial transport and regional connectivity. Any prolonged obstruction along these roads could affect both commercial activities and public transport.

Despite the heightened security arrangements, the situation appeared calm on Wednesday morning. According to the information available up to 8.30am, no fresh labour demonstrations or highway blockades had been reported anywhere in Gazipur.

Traffic on both the Dhaka-Tangail and Dhaka-Mymensingh highways was also reported to be moving normally at that time.

The latest deployment reflects the administration’s precautionary approach to maintaining stability in the industrial belt. With 25 platoons of security personnel and an equal number of executive magistrates assigned to the area, authorities are seeking to prevent further disruption while keeping the region’s transport and industrial activities running normally.
