A large Pangas fish weighing 25 kilograms has been caught from the Padma River in Rajbari and sold at a wholesale fish market for Tk 70,000.
The fish was caught early on Tuesday (28 April) at dawn in the Padma River area of Daulatdia in Goalanda Upazila of Rajbari district. It was caught in the net of local fisherman Ershad Mondal, who had gone fishing during the night at the confluence of the Padma and Jamuna rivers along with his associates.
According to fisherman Ershad Mondal, the group cast their nets late at night and returned to collect them at dawn. When they retrieved the net, they found the unusually large Pangas fish trapped inside. Recognising its commercial value, they transported it to a fish market (arat) in the Daulatdia area for sale.
At the market, the fish was sold through an open auction. Traders participated in bidding, and the fish was ultimately sold at a rate of Tk 2,800 per kilogram. Based on its total weight of 25 kilograms, the final sale price reached Tk 70,000.
Ferry terminal fish trader Md. Chandu Molla purchased the fish at the auction. He stated that he acquired it through the competitive bidding process at the market and is now attempting to sell it in different locations.
The district fisheries officer, Md. Mahbub Ul Haque, commented that the presence of large-sized fish in the Padma River reflects improved fish production conditions. He added that enforcement of government restrictions on fishing, particularly conservation measures and bans in certain periods, has contributed to an environment where fish are able to grow to larger sizes.
The incident highlights both the continued livelihood dependence of local fishers on the Padma River and the economic value of large freshwater fish in regional markets, where size and weight significantly influence auction prices.
