Fatema Mamun, former banker and wife of eminent historian and retired Dhaka University professor Dr Muntasir Mamun, has died at the age of 75. She passed away at 5:30 am on Monday, according to an official statement issued by her family.
Having built a distinguished career in the banking sector, Fatema Mamun retired after decades of professional service. Relatives and acquaintances remembered her as a soft-spoken, steadfast presence who balanced a demanding professional life with her commitment to her family and society.
She leaves behind her husband, Professor Muntasir Mamun, her daughter Roya Muntasir, two sons, Misbahuddin Muntasir and Nabil Muntasir, five grandchildren, and a wide circle of relatives and well-wishers.
Family sources confirmed that her funeral prayers (namaz-e-janaza) will take place in Kachua Upazila of Chandpur District. Following the religious rites, she will be laid to rest at her family graveyard in Chandpur alongside her ancestors.
Throughout Professor Muntasir Mamun’s decades-long career as one of Bangladesh’s foremost historians, researchers, and cultural activists, Fatema Mamun provided unwavering encouragement away from the public eye. Her quiet support proved vital during his extensive research on the 1971 Liberation War, his academic publishing endeavors, and his broader involvement in civil society movements.
News of her passing brought expressions of sympathy from academics, historians, cultural figures, and social organisations across the country. Colleagues and well-wishers conveyed their condolences to Professor Mamun and his family, recalling Fatema Mamun’s warm hospitality, grace, and intellect.
Funeral arrangements in Chandpur are currently being finalised by family members, with local dignitaries and community members expected to attend the final rites to pay their respects.
