The leadership contest for Japan’s ruling party began on Monday, with five candidates competing to become the country’s fourth prime minister in as many years.
Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba withdrew on 7 September following a series of poor election results for the long-dominant but struggling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP).
Five contenders filed their papers on Monday ahead of the party vote scheduled for 4 October. Polls suggest that Sanae Takaichi and Shinjiro Koizumi are the frontrunners.
| Candidate | Age | Background | Notable Attributes |

| Shinjiro Koizumi | 44 | Agriculture Minister | Telegenic; son of former prime minister Junichiro Koizumi |
| Toshimitsu Motegi | 69 | Former top diplomat | Renowned trade negotiator; extensive foreign policy experience |
| Yoshimasa Hayashi | 64 | Government spokesman | Holds large ministerial experience; close ally of Ishiba |
| Takayuki Kobayashi | 50 | Former economic security minister | Focus on economic security and policy reforms |
The candidates will be formally approved before each delivers a policy speech at LDP headquarters on Monday, according to election committee head Ichiro Aisawa.
