Japan’s Ruling Party Leadership Race Kicks Off

The leadership contest for Japan’s ruling party began on Monday, with five candidates competing to become the country’s fourth prime minister in as many years.

Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba withdrew on 7 September following a series of poor election results for the long-dominant but struggling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP).

Five contenders filed their papers on Monday ahead of the party vote scheduled for 4 October. Polls suggest that Sanae Takaichi and Shinjiro Koizumi are the frontrunners.

Candidate Age Background Notable Attributes
Sanae Takaichi 64 Politician Hard-line nationalist; would be Japan’s first female prime minister if elected
Shinjiro Koizumi 44 Agriculture Minister Telegenic; son of former prime minister Junichiro Koizumi
Toshimitsu Motegi 69 Former top diplomat Renowned trade negotiator; extensive foreign policy experience
Yoshimasa Hayashi 64 Government spokesman Holds large ministerial experience; close ally of Ishiba
Takayuki Kobayashi 50 Former economic security minister Focus on economic security and policy reforms

The candidates will be formally approved before each delivers a policy speech at LDP headquarters on Monday, according to election committee head Ichiro Aisawa.

The LDP has governed Japan for all but four years since its founding in 1955. Traditionally, the party leader becomes prime minister due to the LDP’s long-standing legislative majority alongside coalition partner Komeito.

However, over the past year, the coalition lost its majority in both houses of parliament following two significant election defeats under Ishiba.

Whoever wins the leadership race will face a series of complex national issues, including:

  • A rapidly ageing population, with significant social and economic implications
  • A colossal national debt, one of the highest among industrialised nations
  • A faltering economy, challenged by rising prices and sluggish growth

The LDP election on 4 October will be open to ordinary party members, marking a crucial decision point for the future direction of Japan’s government.
