Hong Kong authorities closed schools and cancelled flights on Tuesday as Super Typhoon Ragasa approached, threatening the financial hub with potentially devastating force. Officials warned that the storm could rank among the most destructive in the city’s recent history.
The powerful typhoon posed a serious threat to lives and property, prompting mainland China to suspend operations in at least 10 southern cities, including schools and businesses.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

“Ragasa will pose a serious threat to Hong Kong, which could reach the levels of Hato in 2017 and Mangkhut in 2018,” said Eric Chan, Hong Kong’s number-two official, referring to super typhoons that each caused hundreds of millions in property damage.
Scientists warn that climate change is increasing the intensity of storms, adding urgency to preparation efforts.
