Former US President Donald Trump has publicly criticised Ukraine for allegedly showing “no gratitude” towards the United States amid ongoing efforts to end the Russia–Ukraine war. Trump made the remarks on Sunday via the social media platform Truth Social, highlighting his dissatisfaction with Kyiv’s response to proposals for a negotiated peace.
His comments come as discussions continue in Geneva over a 28-point plan developed jointly by the United States and Russia. Officials from Ukraine, Europe, and the United States have been participating in the talks, which US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has described as “the most productive and meaningful” to date.
In his post, Trump lamented that the Ukrainian leadership had failed to acknowledge American efforts, also referencing the humanitarian crisis caused by nearly four years of conflict. He took the opportunity to criticise the current US administration under President Joe Biden, although he did not directly condemn Moscow for the war.
Under the proposed US–Russia plan, Ukraine would be expected to cede certain territories in its eastern regions to Russia and reduce the size of its military forces. American military support for Kyiv would also be scaled back. These measures have been perceived by Ukraine and its allies as tantamount to surrender.
Earlier in the week, Trump stated that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky must accept the plan, warning that he would otherwise be left to fight alone. He stressed that the plan is not final but suggested that failure to comply could leave Ukraine isolated.
Trump also criticised European countries for continuing to purchase Russian energy supplies despite the conflict. He labelled Joe Biden as “cunning” and claimed the former president provided military aid to Ukraine entirely free of charge. Regarding Russian President Vladimir Putin, Trump simply commented that the invasion occurred while a “sleeping Joe Biden” was in the White House.
