In Tamil Nadu, India, actor-turned-politician Thalapathi Vijay has expressed deep sorrow over the stampede at a Thamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) rally, which claimed at least 39 lives and injured hundreds.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Vijay wrote: “My heart is broken. I am overwhelmed with an anguish and grief beyond words. My deepest condolences go to the families of my beloved brothers and sisters who have lost their lives.”
The tragedy occurred on Saturday evening in Karur district, Tamil Nadu, during a public rally. According to NDTV:
Fatalities: 39 (including 17 women and 9 children)
Injured: At least 500, admitted to hospitals
Thousands had gathered to attend the rally, where Vijay was delivering his speech from the roof of a bus. The extreme crowd density caused chaos. When several attendees lost consciousness, Vijay began distributing water bottles. The scramble for bottles escalated into further disorder. The situation became so dangerous that Vijay had to halt his speech midway. Injured individuals were quickly transported to hospitals via ambulances, while police and administrative authorities struggled to manage the crowd.
