Bangladesh to Earn Significant Funds in Women’s World Cup Even Without a Win

The 13th edition of the Women’s One Day International (ODI) World Cup is set to begin in India today, 30 September, jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka. A total of eight teams will participate in this tournament: hosts India and Sri Lanka, defending champions Australia, Bangladesh, Pakistan, New Zealand, South Africa, and England.

Bangladesh is participating in the Women’s ODI World Cup for the second time. The team, led by Nigar Sultana Jyoti, will begin their campaign on Thursday in Colombo against Pakistan. During the group stage, the Bangladesh Women’s team (the Tigresses) will play a total of seven matches. In their debut tournament in 2022, Bangladesh managed only one victory, which came against Pakistan.

Regardless of whether Bangladesh wins or loses any of their seven group-stage matches, the team will benefit financially. By merely participating in the tournament, the Bangladesh women’s team is guaranteed BDT 3.02 crore. Additionally, for each match won, the Tigresses will earn BDT 41.56 lakh per victory. All prize money is provided by the International Cricket Council (ICC).

The ICC has announced that the total prize pool for this edition of the World Cup is BDT 168.15 crore, the highest in women’s cricket history. The winning team in the final on 2 November will receive BDT 54.26 crore, which surpasses the prize money awarded to Spain for winning the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Across the board, prize money has increased significantly compared to previous tournaments.

Compared to the 2022 Women’s ODI World Cup, the prize pool for this tournament has risen by 297%. Remarkably, it also exceeds the prize money of the 2023 Men’s ODI World Cup. The ICC anticipates that this edition of the Women’s World Cup will elevate women’s cricket to new heights. Cricket fans are eagerly awaiting to see how far Bangladesh progresses in this historic tournament.
