Gaza Coastal Flotilla Raises Security Concerns

The ships of the Global Sumud flotilla, carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza, reached the coast on Wednesday.

By 12:30 AM Bangladesh time, 40 ships from the flotilla were positioned in international waters off the coast of Egypt.

According to Al Jazeera, the flotilla was approximately 80 nautical miles (149 kilometres) from the Gaza coast. Reports indicate that communication with some vessels has been lost. The organisers suspect that the Israeli navy is surrounding the flotilla.

Organisers reported suspicious activity:

Observation Details
Suspicious ships around flotilla At least 12 suspicious vessels were observed near one of the flotilla’s ships, according to Al Jazeera correspondent Hayat Yamani.
Possible blockade Organisers believe the Israeli navy has positioned ships to encircle the flotilla.

Greta Thunberg, speaking from the Sumud flotilla, stated:
“Israel will detain us tonight. They must be held accountable for this.”

Israel has publicly shared a video explaining the reasoning behind detaining the Global Sumud flotilla. In footage released by the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a naval officer is seen warning the flotilla to stop advancing, cautioning of consequences if they proceed.

Key points from the Israeli statement:

  • The flotilla’s stated purpose is purely provocative.
  • Alternative proposals for sending humanitarian aid to Gaza through Italy, Greece, and the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem were rejected by the flotilla.
  • Israel claims the flotilla is advancing toward an active conflict zone, violating a legitimate naval blockade.
  • Any aid can still be delivered safely via approved channels.

Al Jazeera journalists Latfi Haji and Younes Ayat Yassin were reporting live from the flotilla. Contact with them was lost after Israeli forces detained personnel on the ships.

  • On a Syrian vessel, some participants were also detained.
  • Among those arrested is Al Jazeera correspondent Haya Al-Yamani, apprehended during a live broadcast.

According to the Sumud flotilla team, Israeli forces entered international waters to detain several ships.

Other vessels from the flotilla are continuing their journey toward Gaza.

The Sumud flotilla departed Barcelona, Spain, on 31 August.

  • On 8 September, upon reaching Tunis, Tunisia, two vessels suffered drone attacks.
  • After resolving complications, the flotilla left Tunisia on 13 September.
  • In the following two days, additional ships joined from Tunisia and Italy.

Total ships participating: 52

These ships collectively form the humanitarian convoy heading to Gaza.
