Argentina Advances to Next Round After Beating Italy, Brazil Eliminated

The Under-20 FIFA World Cup is currently underway in Chile. On Sunday, 5 October, in the final match of Group D, Argentina defeated Italy 1–0, securing the top spot in the group. Winning all three of their matches, the Albiceleste youth team collected 9 points and advanced to the Round of 16.

From the start, Argentina dominated possession and attacks against Italy. Maintaining 61% ball possession, they created 13 shots, only one of which was on target. However, that single shot proved decisive. In the 74th minute, following a pass from Andrada, defender Dylan Thomas Gorosito scored the match’s only goal.

Earlier, Italy had also scored, but the referee overturned the goal after VAR review, as the play had begun with a foul on an Argentine player.

Meanwhile, Brazil exited the tournament after failing to progress from Group C. After a draw against Mexico and a loss to Morocco in their first two matches, a win against Spain was the only route for the Seleção youth team to reach the Round of 16.

Despite a valiant effort, Brazil were unable to score. In the 8th minute, João Cruz’s volley hit the post and went wide. Multiple attempts by Brazil were thwarted by Spain’s goalkeeper Fran González. Spain, in contrast, secured victory in the 47th minute, when Iker Bravo scored the match’s only goal.

Bravo capitalised on a pass from Pablo García, outmaneuvering Brazil’s defence and goalkeeper to score. Despite continued efforts, Brazil were unable to equalise, finishing bottom of Group C with just 1 point, and were consequently eliminated from the World Cup.
