Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced on Tuesday that she has been accused of “complicity in genocide” in a complaint filed to the International Criminal Court (ICC), linked to Rome’s support for Israel amid its ongoing bombardment of Gaza.
Meloni stated in remarks broadcast by Italian media that the filing was submitted by a Palestinian advocacy group, which alleges that she and other officials are complicit by supplying arms to Israel.
The complaint reportedly names:
| Name | Position | Role in Alleged Complicity |
| Giorgia Meloni | Prime Minister | Supplying arms to Israel |
| Guido Crosetto | Defence Minister | Supplying arms to Israel |
| Antonio Tajani | Foreign Minister | Supporting Israeli military actions |
| Roberto Cingolani | CEO, Leonardo (defence group) | Involved via military-industrial connections |
Meloni commented: “I don’t think there is another case in the world or in history of a complaint of this kind.”
The complaint, dated 1 October, was signed by around 50 individuals, including law professors, lawyers, and public figures.
The filing states: “By supporting the Israeli government, particularly through the supply of lethal weapons, the Italian government has become complicit in the ongoing genocide and the extremely serious war crimes and crimes against humanity committed against the Palestinian people.”
United Nations investigators have accused Israel of committing genocide in the Gaza Strip, where it has been waging war against Hamas for the past two years.
The ICC currently holds arrest warrants for:
| Name | Position | Charges |
| Benjamin Netanyahu | Israeli Prime Minister | War crimes, crimes against humanity |
| Yoav Gallant | Former Defence Minister | War crimes, crimes against humanity |
These charges relate to Israel’s campaign in Gaza, including starvation, murder, and persecution. Neither Netanyahu nor Gallant has been charged with genocide by the ICC.
The Palestinian advocacy group filing the complaint against Meloni is requesting that the court evaluate the possibility of opening a formal investigation into genocide charges.
The complaint comes amid ongoing conflict that has already caused heavy casualties:
| Conflict | Death Toll | Notes |
| Hamas attacks on Israel, October 7, 2023 | 1,219 | Mostly civilians, AFP tally based on Israeli figures |
| Israeli military campaign in Gaza | 67,160 | According to Hamas-run health ministry; UN considers figures credible |
Two years ago, Hamas-led militants launched the deadliest attack in Israel’s history, which prompted a large-scale retaliatory offensive in Gaza.
In addition to the ICC proceedings, South Africa has lodged a case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) accusing Israel of violating the 1948 UN Genocide Convention.
Meloni’s inclusion in the ICC complaint marks a rare instance of a sitting head of government being accused of complicity in a conflict-related genocide, highlighting escalating legal and diplomatic tensions surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
