A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck the southern Philippines on Friday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), just one week after two powerful tremors shook the nation.
Initial assessments reported no immediate casualties or significant damage, provincial rescuer Ralph Cadalena told AFP.
“We felt a sudden strong shake, but it was only for a very short time,” said Cadalena, describing the moment the tremor hit.
The quake’s epicentre was recorded near the municipality of Dapa in Surigao del Norte province, at an estimated depth of 69 kilometres (43 miles), the USGS stated.
The latest tremor comes just a week after two major earthquakes — measuring 7.4 and 6.7 on the Richter scale — struck the eastern region of Mindanao, resulting in at least eight fatalities and extensive damage.
These quakes were themselves preceded by another magnitude 6.9 earthquake, which hit Cebu province in the central Philippines only days earlier. That disaster killed 76 people and damaged or destroyed around 72,000 homes, according to official government statistics.
The string of powerful tremors has raised renewed concern about the country’s seismic vulnerability and the ability of infrastructure to withstand major geological events.
Earthquakes are commonplace in the Philippines, which sits along the Pacific “Ring of Fire” — a vast arc of tectonic fault lines known for intense volcanic and seismic activity. The region extends from Japan through Southeast Asia and across the Pacific Basin, making it one of the most earthquake-prone zones in the world.
One of the nation’s most devastating natural disasters occurred in 1976, when an 8.0-magnitude quake off the south-western coast of Mindanao triggered a massive tsunami, leaving around 8,000 people dead or missing.
Major Earthquakes in the Philippines (Recent and Historical)
| Date | Location | Magnitude | Casualties / Impact |
| Friday (latest) | Dapa, Surigao del Norte | 6.1 | No casualties or damage reported |
| Previous week | Eastern Mindanao | 7.4 & 6.7 | At least 8 killed |
| Earlier that week | Cebu Province | 6.9 | 76 dead; 72,000 homes damaged or destroyed |
| 1976 | Off Mindanao (south-west coast) | 8.0 | ~8,000 dead or missing; tsunami triggered |
The Philippine authorities continue to monitor aftershocks and assess potential structural risks, as experts warn that the frequency of seismic events in the region underscores the ongoing need for preparedness and resilient construction.
While Friday’s earthquake appears to have caused minimal impact, it serves as yet another reminder of the country’s constant exposure to tectonic hazards.
