Scotland recorded their first victory at a World Cup finals since 1990 by defeating Haiti 1-0 at the Boston Stadium in Foxborough on Sunday. The three points propelled the European nation to the top of Group C, moving them ahead of traditional heavyweights Brazil and Morocco, who had previously played out a 1-1 draw.
The fixture carried immense historical significance for both nations. Scotland were competing in their first World Cup match since 1998, ending a 28-year absence from the tournament. Haiti, meanwhile, were making their first appearance on the world stage in 52 years, having last qualified for the tournament in 1974 in West Germany.
Scotland established the early tempo of the match and were nearly rewarded in the 17th minute. Finding himself unmarked in an advanced position, team captain Scott McTominay unleashed a powerful shot that clipped the upper edge of the crossbar and went out of play.
The deadlock was broken in the 28th minute through a sequence initiated by forward Che Adams. Adams mishit a shot inside the penalty box, causing the ball to strike Haitian goalkeeper Johny Placide and rebound into an unoccupied area of the box. Midfielder John McGinn reacted first, striking the loose ball from 13 yards out. The shot took a significant deflection off a Haitian defender, wrongfooting Placide as it crossed the line to give Scotland the lead.
Haiti adjusted their tactics in the second half and created several clear opportunities to equalise as the match progressed. In the 74th minute, Louicius Don Deedson delivered a precise cross into the penalty area to find Wilson Isidor, but the forward failed to steer his effort into the back of the net.
The Caribbean nation threatened again in the 84th minute during a late spell of sustained pressure. Striker Frantzdy Pierrot rose highest to meet a cross, but his header drifted narrowly wide of the left-hand post. Scotland preserved their clean sheet until the final whistle, securing their first World Cup win since a 2-1 defeat of Sweden 36 years earlier. Haiti remain in search of their first-ever point at a World Cup finals.
Group C action resumes on 20 June. Scotland will play Morocco at the Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, while Haiti travel to Philadelphia to face Brazil.
