Dhaka Stock Market Crosses Tk 500 Crore Mark After 10 Trading Days

After ten consecutive sessions of sluggish turnover, the country’s main stock exchange — the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) — witnessed a rise in trading activity on Wednesday (29 October), surpassing the Tk 500 crore mark once again. Alongside an overall increase in turnover, the prices of most shares and units advanced, leading to a rise in all major indices.

According to market data, a total of 394 companies and mutual funds traded their shares and units on the DSE during the session. Among these, prices of 175 securities rose, 153 declined, while 66 remained unchanged. Of the gaining securities, 97 belonged to the ‘A’ category, 49 to the ‘B’ category, and 46 to the ‘Z’ category.

Due to the broad-based price rise, the DSEX, the DSE’s key benchmark index, gained 8 points, settling at 5,092 points, compared to 5,084 points on the previous day (Tuesday).

Other indices also advanced: the DSES (Shariah Index) increased by 4 points to 1,075 points, while the DS30 Index, comprising the top 30 performing companies, climbed 9 points to close at 1,974 points.

Trading turnover saw a significant rise compared to the previous day, increasing by Tk 52.27 crore. On Wednesday, total transactions on the DSE amounted to Tk 503.64 crore, marking the highest turnover since 14 October, when the figure reached Tk 606.43 crore. Following that session, the DSE had remained below the Tk 500 crore threshold for ten consecutive trading days.

Meanwhile, the country’s second bourse — the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) — also recorded gains across all indices on the same day, even though its overall trading volume was nearly halved.

The CASPI, CSE’s broad index, gained 23 points to stand at 14,273 points, while the CSCX index rose 22 points to close at 8,807 points.

A total of 194 companies traded on the CSE during the session, with 94 seeing price gains, 81 witnessing declines, and 19 remaining unchanged by the close of the day. The total turnover at the CSE stood at Tk 18.57 crore, a significant drop from Tk 35.59 crore recorded on Tuesday.

Overall, Wednesday’s market performance reflected renewed investor participation and a mild resurgence in trading momentum across both exchanges, breaking a ten-day streak of subdued activity in Bangladesh’s capital market.
