US President Donald Trump has threatened military action in Nigeria over allegations of killings of Christians in the country. He warned that if the Nigerian government fails to act, the US may not only halt its aid but also launch a swift and “brutal” attack. Al Jazeera news.
A day before issuing the threat, Trump claimed that thousands of Christians had been killed in Nigeria by radical Islamist groups and that the Christian population in the country was under serious threat.
In a social media post on Saturday (November 1), Trump wrote, “If the Nigerian government fails to stop the killings of Christians, the United States will immediately cut off all forms of assistance to the country.”
He further stated, “We will likely enter that disgraced nation—‘guns will roar’—to completely eliminate the Islamic terrorists who are committing these horrific atrocities.”
However, Trump did not specify which group or particular incident he was referring to as “atrocities.”
He also said, “I am directing our Department of War to prepare for possible action. If we strike, it will be swift, ruthless, and effective—just as these terrorists are attacking our beloved Christians. Warning: the Nigerian government must act quickly!”
The Nigerian government has yet to respond to Trump’s threat.
A day earlier, Trump announced that Nigeria, Africa’s largest oil producer and most populous nation, would be added to the US list of “countries of particular concern.”
