Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence expressed her views on the current political situation in the United States last September at the San Sebastián Film Festival in Spain. At that time, she also spoke out in support of the Palestinians. Recently, while promoting her new film Die My Love, Lawrence appeared on The Interview, a podcast by The New York Times. This time, however, she was noticeably restrained, saying she no longer wants to talk about politics.
During Trump’s first administration, Lawrence was one of his sharpest critics. In an article written after the election, she had stated, “In the United States, only white men feel safe now, because their rights are the only ones that are recognized.”
In her recent interview, when asked what she now thinks about Trump and politics, Lawrence replied, “Honestly, I don’t know if I should be talking about these things anymore. Trump’s first term was chaotic, and at that time I felt like I had to do something. But now we’ve realized that celebrities’ opinions don’t really affect elections. So what am I really doing?”
She added that she now prefers to speak cautiously so that her comments do not create any new controversy. “I’m going through a kind of mental reevaluation,” she said. “I’m an artist. I don’t want people to turn away from my work or my films because of my political opinions. I want people to get lost in the story, not in politics. If my words don’t bring calm but instead make things worse, I’ll choose silence.”
Lawrence said she has seen many actors’ careers damaged solely because of their political opinions. However, she now expresses her own beliefs through her work. Her production company’s projects include Bread and Roses, a film about three Afghan women, and a documentary about anti-abortion laws.
When asked if she regrets her past comments, Lawrence laughed and said, “Probably yes. I regret almost everything I’ve ever said! Now I just want to take all the memory cards out of the cameras.” Speaking about Trump’s second term, she added, “This time it’s different. Because now we knew what he could do. We knew what he had done in those four years. And yet, we still chose him.”
Jennifer Lawrence’s new movie Die My Love was released last Friday.
