Trump threatens $10 billion lawsuit against BBC

Former US President Donald Trump has threatened to sue the BBC for $10 billion, following a controversy over the editing of his statements in one of its documentaries. On Monday, his legal team sent a letter to the broadcaster.

The letter gave the BBC a deadline of Friday to withdraw the programme, issue an apology, and provide “appropriate compensation.” Should the broadcaster fail to comply, Trump has warned he will pursue legal action seeking at least $10 billion in damages.

The documentary in question, Panorama, reportedly spliced together two of Trump’s statements in a way that suggested he had recklessly encouraged supporters during the January 6, 2021, Capitol Hill attack. The programme has provoked strong reactions in Washington.

The matter came to light after a former BBC adviser, Michael Prescott, leaked an internal document to the Daily Telegraph. The document allegedly highlighted perceived bias in BBC coverage on issues including Israel’s attacks in Gaza, transgender topics, and Trump’s own statements.

Amid mounting criticism, BBC Director-General Tim Davie and Head of News Deborah Turness resigned on Sunday. In a statement, Davie said, “Mistakes were made. Ultimately, as Director-General, I must take responsibility.” Turness added, “The ultimate responsibility lies with me.”

On Monday, BBC Chairman Samir Shah expressed regret over the editing of Trump’s statements, describing it as a “considered error” that created a misleading impression. He emphasised the corporation’s commitment to restoring public trust and upholding the highest standards of journalism.
