Five Arrested, Including Two Shooters, over Mamun Murder in Old Dhaka

Detectives from the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) have arrested five individuals, including two hired gunmen, in connection with the murder of Tariq Saif Mamun in Old Dhaka. The arrests were confirmed by a senior official of the DMP’s Detective Branch (DB) on Tuesday (11 November) evening.

According to the official, the two gunmen were attempting to flee across the border when they were detained. The arrested shooters have been identified as Kutta Faruk and Robin, both described as professional hitmen. Another suspect named Rubel, who assisted them at the crime scene, has also been taken into custody. The identities of the remaining two detainees have not yet been disclosed.

The senior DB officer said the arrests were made on Monday (10 November) in the Itakhola area of Narsingdi, following a pursuit that began in Moulvibazar, Sylhet. Following their arrest, the DB team conducted raids to recover weapons used in the killing. Two pistols and six rounds of ammunition were seized from Dhaka’s Rayerbazar area.

Earlier on Monday morning, Tariq Saif Mamun was shot dead in broad daylight near the National Medical College area in Old Dhaka. Family members stated that he was attacked by assailants while returning to his Aftabnagar residence after attending a court hearing related to an old case.

CCTV footage of the incident shows Mamun walking alone towards the main road at 10:52:42 a.m. Moments later, at 10:53:11, he is seen running back towards the alley as two assailants chase after him, firing multiple shots. The gunmen then tucked their weapons into their waists and fled the scene, while pedestrians ran for cover.

Mamun was a known figure in Dhaka’s criminal underworld and was once a close associate of top gangster Sanjidul Islam Imon. Together, they formed the notorious Imon-Mamun gang, which terrorised the Dhanmondi, Mohammadpur, and Tejgaon areas for years.

He was also an accused in the murder case of film actor Sohel Chowdhury and was released on bail in 2023 after serving over 20 years in prison.

According to police sources, a long-standing feud between Mamun and Imon over control of Dhaka’s criminal network may have led to Mamun’s assassination.
