Ahead of the online-declared ‘lockdown’ programme by the Awami League, several incidents of cocktail explosions occurred today, Monday, in Manikganj, including one at the bus stand. The security forces have also put in place stringent security measures in anticipation of the programme scheduled for Thursday, 13th November.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has stated that a large number of police personnel have already been deployed in the capital. At least 17,000 police officers will be stationed on Thursday, with additional forces from the army, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), and intelligence agencies also involved in maintaining law and order.
In recent days, posts on the Awami League’s official Facebook page, as well as on the pages of its leaders, have confirmed that the ‘lockdown’ programme will take place on 13th November. The police, in turn, have been conducting raids and searches in Dhaka to prevent the execution of this programme by the banned organisation. Several covert attacks have already taken place. Three buses in Dhaka were set on fire today, and at least 10 cocktails exploded in seven different locations.
DMP Commissioner Sheikh Md. Sajjat Ali said today that the law enforcement agencies, including the police, are fully prepared for maximum security to prevent the Awami League’s programme. He mentioned that anyone found out on the streets attempting to participate in the programme will be arrested. He further assured that no significant action is expected from the Awami League at this stage, and there is no immediate threat of unpleasant incidents occurring.
