Public Expectations Not Met in Announcement of National Election

Jamaat-e-Islami has expressed disappointment, stating that the recent announcement by Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus regarding the simultaneous scheduling of the national parliamentary election and a public referendum has failed to meet public expectations. The response came from the party’s Secretary General, Professor Mia Golam Parwar, immediately following Dr Yunus’s address to the nation.

Speaking at a press conference held yesterday afternoon at the party’s central office in Mogbazar, Professor Parwar said, “We had hoped that holding both the election and the referendum on the same day would ensure a crisis-free, transparent, and fair process. However, the announcement has left the existing political tensions unresolved.”

He added that the implementation order of the July National Charter has been issued, and preparations are underway to hold the November referendum alongside the five-point popular demands outlined by the party. “Discussions with like-minded parties, including Islami Andolan Bangladesh and Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis, will continue to determine the next steps,” he said.

The press conference, chaired by Assistant Secretary General and head of the central media and publicity department Ehsanul Mahbub Zubayer, was attended by senior party officials, including Assistant Secretary General Maulana Abdul Halim, Central Executive Council member Saiful Alam Khan Milon, Dhaka Metropolitan South Amir Nurul Islam Bulbul, North Deputy Amir Abdur Rahman Musa, and Dhaka South Deputy Amir Advocate Dr Helal Uddin.

Professor Parwar also addressed the actions of the outlawed Awami League, accusing them of inciting nationwide chaos and violence. “Those who have committed crimes and atrocities will never be accepted by the nation again. The people have already resisted them, and they cannot freely operate in the country today,” he stated. He further criticised the Prime Minister, alleging that Sheikh Hasina is using Indian media to threaten the Chief Adviser and other national figures.

Jamaat-e-Islami reaffirmed its call for national unity and the protection of democratic processes, emphasising that political promises must be translated into concrete actions to ensure the credibility of both the election and referendum.
