Environmental advisor Syeda Rizwana Hasan has stated that nearly 90 percent of old buildings in Dhaka have been constructed without adhering to building codes. She warned that recent earthquakes serve as a clear alert for the capital, with Dhaka and Old Dhaka being particularly at risk.
Responding to journalists’ questions on Friday (21 November) in Mirpur, she said that in the past five years, the earthquakes felt were stronger than ever before, and repeated warnings have been issued. Immediate preparedness is essential.
She added that while new buildings follow the building codes, most of the older structures were constructed without approval. According to RAJUK statistics, nearly 90 percent of the buildings deviate from regulations. Engineering solutions and risk mitigation measures are urgently needed for these structures.
Syeda Rizwana Hasan also emphasised that there should be no compromise in constructing high-rise buildings. While the population pressure requires building upwards, it should not come at the cost of the environment. She also warned against filling wetlands and cutting hills to develop infrastructure.
