NBR Extends Income Tax Return Deadline by One Month

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has extended the deadline for individual taxpayers to submit their income tax returns by one month. A special order issued on Sunday set the new deadline for 31 December, whereas the previous deadline was scheduled to end on 30 November.

Additionally, due to registration-related issues in the e-return system, the NBR has issued another directive stating that any taxpayer unable to file their return online may apply to the respective tax circle officer by 15 December with specific justification.

According to the NBR, online tax return submission has been made mandatory this year for all individual taxpayers except senior citizens aged 65 or above, physically disabled or specially challenged taxpayers, Bangladeshi citizens residing abroad, legal representatives filing on behalf of deceased taxpayers and foreign nationals working in Bangladesh. Though some categories have been exempted from the mandatory online submission requirement for the 2025–26 tax year, they may still file e-returns if they wish.

A taxpayer’s authorised representative may also file the e-return online this year. For expatriate Bangladeshis, online filing is not compulsory; however, by sending passport number, national identity number, email address and related details to ereturn@etaxnbr.gov.bd, an OTP and registration link are being sent to their email, enabling them to register and file their income tax return online.

Without uploading any documents, taxpayers may provide accurate information on their income, expenditure, assets and liabilities through the e-return system and pay taxes conveniently from home. Payment can be made using debit cards, credit cards, internet banking or mobile financial services (such as bKash, Nagad etc.). Upon filing, the e-return slip and the tax certificate can be printed instantly through the automated system.

So far this year, over 1.8 million taxpayers have submitted e-returns online.
