Sexual Harassment on Bus in Uttara

In a troubling case that has reignited debates about women’s safety in Dhaka, a young woman was sexually harassed and physically attacked on a moving bus in Uttara on Friday afternoon (28 November). The 24-year-old victim filed a general diary at Uttara West Police Station against nine to ten unidentified individuals responsible for the assault.

According to her report, she was travelling from Kawran Bazar to Uttara House Building and had dozed off in her seat. A male passenger allegedly touched her inappropriately. When she resisted, the attackers allegedly assaulted her and locked the bus doors, preventing her escape. Two elderly passengers who intervened were also threatened, and as the attackers disembarked, the victim was reportedly threatened with death. She later received medical attention at the Kuwait-Bangladesh Friendship Government Hospital in Uttara-Azampur.

The woman told reporters, “Even in 2025, women continue to face harassment on the streets. It is deeply distressing. They could have killed me. I demand the maximum punishment for those responsible. The government must take urgent action to ensure women can travel safely.”

Investigation officer Mohammad Ullah Faisal of Uttara West Police Station confirmed the GD and emphasised that the matter is being taken seriously.

This incident highlights the persistent risks women face in public spaces and the challenges of ensuring safety on crowded buses. It also raises questions about the adequacy of security measures on public transport and underscores the urgent need for awareness, surveillance, and law enforcement vigilance to prevent such incidents.
